One-Click Unsubscribe Implementation and Visiblity within GMAIL
Overview
The industry has evolved and now it is REQUIRED that all bulk mailers include a one-click unsubscribe. Not a "click to unsubscribe and fill out a form or process a confirmation email". They must support unsubscribing in one click. There are two ways to do this:
- via an experimental "email-method" that has never been standards within the industry, and
- web-link in the email header-- this is the fastest and best way and when the user clicks on is immediately unsubscribed.
In the past, GMAIL supported both, but in an effort to prevent an ESP from collecting data on the google user, they now chose to ignore our RFC-8058 compliant, industry-standard method and chose to only display an experimental "email implemented" unsubscribe links:
Here is how an older, experimental "email implemented" link would look:
List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:1axdi6r2dkhsunrm24hqe6zs2u1ocixeuqtlqr@bf05x.XXXXXXX.net?subject=unsubscribe>
Here is an a more modern RFC-8058, what we implement; immediate one-click-email-unsubscribe link works ("web implemented"):
List-Unsubscribe: <https://ct.XXXX.com/ga/unsubscribe/2-0-XXXXXXXXXXX6e6>
